Irbene - Ventspils,abandoned town

Sunday 4 May 2008

On saturday we went for out longest trip to Ventspils. Our destination was Irbene, abandoned town near the VIRAC - Ventspils Radio Location Center, the last available and working one,was 3 of them, one not working, one was distracted by Russian army when they left, and one is still working.

"Near Ventspils, a city on Baltic Sea, in Irbene there is a 32-meter fully steerable parabolic, centimetre-wave range antenna RT-32 and a 16-meter diameter antenna RT-16. They were taken over by the Latvian Academy of Sciences after withdrawal of the Russian army from Latvia in 1994. On the basis of these antennas and accompanying facilities of the former Space Communication Center, the Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Center (VIRAC) has been established.
The main purpose of the VIRAC is to take part in observations of cosmic sources of natural and artificial radiation in order to accumulate observational data for fundamental and practical research programs in radio astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, geophysics, geodynamics, geodesy, coordinate-time service and other.
Currently one of the main VIRAC goals is to become a member of the European VLBI Network (EVN)."

"Irbene radioastronomy centre with abandoned military village.
Ex-soviet army top secret military radio spying centre with two RT-32 and RT-16 radio satellites surrounded by abandoned military village. RT-32 antenna is renewed, and is used by scientists from baltic countries, and by Ventspils university students, open for an excursions also. Great place to see, and wonderful feelings when climbed up to RT-32antenna. RT-16 locator is in renovation process and is closed for tourist groups or individual explorers."

Was a funny trip, we went throught the small village POPE,where we got lost, then we gone for a small ecscursion to the Locator, and to the abandoned village, then to Ventspils, and back to Riga.
The village reminded me a pictures of Pripjat, same big lost buildings, old books on the floor, parts of a doll, funny banners with russian PSSR sayings, the paintings on the walls... and none alive. Althought people took everything they could take from that place, such a wooden windows, and other wooden things, metall, etc. the place still looks interesting and exciting to explore.

Successful Weight Loss: Top 10 Tips On What Works and Why

By Kathleen Goodwin, RD

For many people weight loss is a chronic endeavor. All too often the shedding of pounds is a temporary event followed by a steady regain of lost weight. Most popular diets are unsuccessful in the long run because they fail to address the multi-faceted nature of what successful, permanent weight loss entails. Luckily, research has revealed many invaluable strategies which can help increase your odds of permanent weight loss. While no single article can possibly cover this vast subject, we have provided links to excellent weight loss programs and books which are backed by clinical research, and can significantly help you in your quest. We also encourage you to browse through our hand-picked award links to learn more about the best strategies you can incorporate for long term weight loss success.
10 Strategies for permanent weight loss
1. Exercise is essential for weight loss

It's nothing new, but exercise is probably the most important predictor of whether you will succeed at long term weight loss and weight loss maintenance. In order for exercise to be helpful in weight loss, you should strive for a minimum of five 30 minute sessions per week. The good news is that recent research has shown that three 10 minute sessions in a day are as good as one 30 minute session. This helps many in combating the old "no time for exercise" excuse. Be certain to find something you enjoy. You'll be more apt to stick with it. Try walking with a friend, joining an intramural sports league, participating in outings with a group like The Sierra Club, or trying some classes at your local gym. Once you give exercise a chance, you will begin to enjoy its positive benefits on your psyche as well; you will literally become "hooked."

Having trouble getting a workout in? Why not try one of these Diet Channel recommended programs:

* 15 minute boot camp workout
* Power workout for busy executives
* 10 minute workout for busy moms

2. Weight loss and weight training

We chose to list this separately from the "exercise" category because of the significant weight loss benefits attached to weight training in and of itself. The basic equation is this: the more muscle tissue you have, the more calories you will burn. This is why world class weight lifters must eat thousands of calories a day to maintain their weight. Muscle is active tissue, fat is not. Thus, muscle "burns" a significant number of calories each day for its own maintenance. In her book Strong Women Stay Slim, Miriam Nelson, a Tufts University researcher, showed that a group of women who followed a weight loss diet and did weight training exercises lost 44% more fat than those who only followed the diet. While aerobic activity can help burn calories, muscle's where it's at when it comes to giving your metabolism a significant daily boost even at rest.

Read Cardio and Strength Training: How do you create a balanced routine? to find out how best to pursue numbers 1 and 2 above in tandem.
3. Keep a diary for triggers that hinder weight loss

Keeping a food diary can be a huge asset in successful weight loss. Devote some time each day to record what you have eaten and how much, your hunger level prior to eating, and any feelings or emotions present at the time. A food diary can provide a large amount of self-awareness. It can identify emotions and behaviors that trigger overeating, foster greater awareness of portion sizes, and help you discover your personal food triggers. Study any patterns that emerge from your food diary and identify where you may be able to make more healthful changes. A food diary provides an added benefit of keeping you focused on and committed to your goals. Start keeping a food diary today by printing our food diary.
4. Stay focused on being healthy, not on becoming thin

Many people become more successful at long term weight loss when their motivation changes from wanting to be thinner to wanting to be healthier. Change your mindset to think about selecting foods that will help your body's health rather than worrying about foods that will affect your body's weight. The Food Pyramid offers a basic outline of the types and amounts of food you should eat each day to give your body the nutrients it needs for optimal health.
5. Find out why you overeat

All too often overeating is triggered by stress, boredom, loneliness, anger, depression and other emotions. Learning to deal with emotions without food is a significant skill that will greatly serve long term weight control. The Solution, a book and national program developed by Laurel Mellin, RD, helps participants to identify their eating triggers and respond to them without food. A research study showed that the participants in this program demonstrated a better rate of long term weight loss maintenance than those who simply diet and/or exercise and don't address behavioral and emotional issues. Chronic over-eaters and "emotional eaters" can be significantly helped by learning new behavioral skills such as those Mellin presents. You can also seek help with behavioral and emotional eating issues from a licensed counselor or psychologist in your area.
6. Weight loss support: join a weight management group

A big key in long term weight control comes from receiving encouragement and support from others. You can check to see if groups such as Jenny Craig offer programs and resources in your areas. You may also wish to check with your local hospital to see if their registered dietitian conducts group weight loss programs.
7. Weight loss and portion control

With the advent of "super-size" meals and increasingly huge portions at restaurants, our concept of normal serving sizes is a distant memory. Be mindful of the amounts of food you consume at a sitting. When necessary, divide your food in half and ask for a take home bag. It is all too easy to be a "plate cleaner" even when served enormous portions. Learn to pay attention to your hunger level and stop eating when you feel comfortably full, not stuffed.
8: Lose weight slowly with small changes

Try to remember that "losing 15 pounds in two weeks" is nothing to celebrate. It is important to realize that the more quickly weight is lost, the more likely the loss is coming from water and muscle, not fat. Since muscle tissue is critical in keeping our metabolism elevated, losing it actually leads to a decrease in the amount of calories we can each day without gaining weight. Fat loss is best achieved when weight is lost slowly. Strive for a weight loss of no more than 1-2 pounds per week. One pound of weight is equivalent to 3500 calories. By making small changes like eliminating 250 calories a day from food and expending 250 calories a day from exercise, you can lose one pound (of mostly fat) per week. You can calculate how much time you need to exercise to burn 250 calories by clicking here. You can calculate your caloric needs by clicking here, and then subtract 250 from that number.
9. Eating slowly can lead to weight loss

Did you ever notice that thin people take an awfully long time to eat their food? Eating slowly is one method that can help take off pounds. That's because from the time you begin eating it takes the brain 20 minutes to start signaling feelings of fullness. Fast eaters often eat beyond their true level of fullness before the 20 minute signal has had a chance to set in. The amount of calories consumed before you begin to feel full can vary significantly depending on how quickly you eat. So slow down, take smaller bites and enjoy and savor every tasty morsel.
10. Weight loss through eating less fat - but do it wisely

We've known for some time that limiting high fat foods in the diet can be helpful with weight loss. That's because fats pack in 9 calories per gram compared to only 4 calories per gram from proteins or carbohydrates. To many, the message to limit fats implied an endorsement to eat unlimited amounts of fat-free products. Just to clarify, fat-free foods have calories too. In some cases fat-free foods have as many calories as their fat laden counterparts. If you eat more calories than your body uses, you will gain weight. Eating less fat will help you to lose weight. Eating less fat and replacing it with excessive amounts of fat-free products will not.

For more information on high-fat foods you should continue to eat, even when trying to lose weight, see the following article from TheDietChannel: Healthy and Fat? 5 High-Fat Foods You Should Not Avoid.

Love issues

Friday 25 April 2008

We've been together like 8 years already. Well, we know each other for so long. But all this time we've been breaking up and getting together again.
For few simple reasons, first his ability to get a normal job, everytime he heas a money problems, he has depression and not willibg to have relayionships.
Second his favorite pot and even more serious drugs, still not sure he's quit or sometimes still using.
And the last, he dont want to live together for a full time, just for 2-3 times a week. Because he likes to sleep from friday to monday morning, all weekend. And I want to spend time together... nice. He forget to answer on sms,im, and to call..
And everytime I try to end this, he's either crying, either begging me to stay, saying he will change his attitude.

I have some feeling for him, but I guess it's more a habbit, not love.
I'm tired of this... and I don't know why I'm still with him.

I guess I'll be able to quit this, only If I fall inlove with someone else again...

yesterdays trip - Jurmala

Sunday 20 April 2008

Yesterday was a great weather, so sunny, so warm... we decided to go to Jurmala.
"Jurmala – the largest resort city in the Baltic States is well-known for its natural treasures – the mild climate, sea, healthy air, curative mud and mineral water. The attraction of Jurmala hides in its almost 33 km long white sand beach, the large pine forest and the natural border of the city – the river Lielupe. In Jurmala, You will discover a combination of charming wooden houses built in the beginning of the last century and modern resort buildings."

We had a nice walk on the beach in Majori (center part of Jurmala), and then we saw these buildings, one is built during the Soviet times, haven't found any info about it, but it's situated on a hill, with a gorgeous view on the beach and sea. This building is first in the video, for now is abandoned.

And another is situated on the beach, same in Majori station, with a huge territory.
Situated on Z.Mejerovitsa's prospectus 43 - sanatorium Marienbad. The building exists since 1870. A gate with a stone fence are constructed in the beginning of 20-th century. The tower with gallery is completed in 1926. The architect Пиранг. In the end of 40th years the basic building has been reconstructed. Some subjects of an interior represent art value. This place looks abandoned too.

Sensation White

Just bought a ticket to SENSATION WHITE!
Will be held in Riga again this june, last year I wasn't able to come, due to expensive ticket price, but this year I bough one! Now all I need is a dresscode - all white, time to get something white :)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sensation White is mostly a trance and house event. All the attendees are required to wear white and the Amsterdam ArenA itself is decorated to match. Sensation White's slogan is "Be Part Of The Night - Dress in White". Every event has around 40,000-45,000 tickets available. The Amsterdam ArenA event takes place every year on the first Saturday in July.

Notable DJ's that have appeared at Sensation White include André Tanneberger, Armin van Buuren, Darren Emerson (one of the Underworld members), David Guetta, Erick E, Erick Morillo, Ferry Corsten, Marco V, Paul van Dyk, Johan Gielen, Sander Kleinenberg, Steve Angello, Tiësto, Fedde Le Grand and Mason.

The event has recently been criticized by trance fans who think there's too much house and electro and too few Trance DJs in the recent events. However, in the eyes of the organisers, the popularity of trance has been receding in the past few years, and therefore Sensation White has adapted to this by altering its programming to add house and electro. Nonetheless, the popularity of trance and indeed the DJs associated with the genre still seem to be a major force in Europe. Trance Energy, with over 30,000 people, has been selling out faster than ever before.

History of Bauska

We went to Bauska last weekend, about 40min by car from Riga.
The city was almost empty, and quiet, but with cute 1-2 floor old houses.
What's funny, I never saw so much raven in the city. they all gathered in some other birds jacks, since they doesn't make their own, and every tree in the city has 2-5 ravens :)) Quite noisy.

This is a funny peace too, "Bauskas Life"(Bauskas Dzive Laikraksts) - newspaper.
It say's: New editions header "Teens drunk. What to do?"

Bauskas wooden bridge, and Bauskas castle, which is on reconstraction now, so you can't get in :( The middle picture is how it looked before, and next how it looks now.

Bauska is a small picturesque town with the population of 11,700 and it covers 8 km2, the territory of the town is 634.4 ha.

Bauska is situated on Via Baltica, 66 km from Riga, the capital of Latvia.
Bauska lies in the south of Latvia, not far from the state border. Owing to fertile soil of the Zemgale plain and favourable weather conditions (mean temperature in January is -5o C and in July +17oC) Bauska district has developed into a typically agrarian region. The length of the vegetation period is 185-190 days.
In ancient times its territory was inhabited by ancient Latvian tribe called the Zemgali.

The town was granted municipal rights in 1609. In 2009 Bauska is going to celebrate its 400th anniversary.

History
Bauska is situated in the Southern part of Latvia. It borders with Lithuania. Town is on the Via Baltic, the Motorway A7. Number of residents: 10361 Area: 6.2 square kilometres. Distance to Capital City Riga: 64 km

Town has both ancient traditions of culture and it is dynamically developing today.

Archaeologists have found evidences for the possible settlement in the confluence of the Rivers Musa and Memele.

In this settlement people lived about 3500 years ago. In 1594 there was built the first known concrete building in the Town – the Church of Holy Spirit what at that time belonged to the German congregation.

At the end of the 16th century and in the beginning of the 17th century Bauska grew rapidly as a centre of merchants and craftsmen of the Dukedom. There formed the street planning of the present Old Town.

The year of granting the rights of a Town for Bauska is not known and most often as the foundation year of the Town is considered the year of 1609 when the Duke Friedrich made a present of seal with the picture of lion to Bauska. During the time of the Duke Friedrich Bauska obtained all the attributes and privileges characteristic for towns of that time: in 1615 – the privilege to construct the Town Council Building, in 1635 the Rules of Order.

Breath of ancient history and the heritage of culture in the Old Town is to be felt even today because there have remained many historical buildings.

Nowadays after the restoration of the independence of Latvia in the Town there have occurred many changes. Bauska buildings have got back their landlords. The reconstruction of Bauska Castle begun in the second half of the 80-ies. In 1999 the Town obtained its flag. In 2000 there was made wider the bridge over the River Memele, in 2000-2001 there was realized the project on the improvement of traffic through Bauska reconstructing Zala and Kalna Street.

Today Bauska has engaged in several International projects that are turned towards the development of the Town’s infrastructure.

Development of tourism is considered as important as other fields of development.

Hope I will be able to take it off, once I'll decide not to wear them anymore lol. Didn't tried glue before...

And so many different people, old, young... :) Beautiful!

I'm a huge CSI Las Vegas fan, but since my fave Sara Sidle left the show...
I'm watching it less often... There was such a beautiful ,secret love story of a two smart people... they were destined to be together :(((

Anyway I still admire Catherine Willow... real fighter, that's the type of woman I always wanted to be. And maybe I am, but as a sagittarius, and a damn perfectionist.. I'm always thinking I can be better..

And on the other side, I'm still a romantic, gentle person. Who believes in a real love, and fairy-tales.. but too afraid to show that side in this cruel and rough world ;(

Or maybe I watch too much, Mexican soaps, and TV-shows like Desperate Housewives, Reba, and wearing a pink glasses?

Tervete

When we got to the bus to Tervete.
Took about 1 hour or so, kind of a long road. The bus was old, but comfortable inside. The road from Tervete took only 30min, different road:)

We went through the forest-park, actually we were looking for the abandoned PSSR Rocket Base.
The former Russian army left the base, after Latvia became independent in 1991.
After 2 hours of looking, quite large forest and only 5-6 small houses around, one little store.

We found the base territory, which is quite big. And we were surprised, when on the other side of the gates (entrance to the base)we noticed a small(I guess former guard house)house, one room maybe, and a real people with kids living there, they even made a nice garage for the car from the old hangar. Looked like they just came there and started to live there lol :)

All territory was full of sighs "No digging", and when we were going there, we saw a guy with a metal detector lol, and a lot of holes near the bunkers, don't know what the people trying to find there...
Well I even saw a real fox lol. But nothing good to take pic's of, just an interesting place.

Riga-Jelgava-Tervete

Our trip from Riga to Jelgava, and from Jelgava to Tervete.
Add Imagefrom Jelgava to Tervete. It took us about an hour to get to Jelgava by train.
Well, while we were waiting for the bus to Tervete, we did a nice look around walk in the city.

Looks different from Riga, a lot of old buildings from PSSR architecture, and very old cathedrals. Only two big supermarkets, and not much people on the streets.

I liked the Rastrelli palace, in the center:
"The old castle (1266) of the dukes of Courland, situated on an island in the river, was destroyed by Duke Biren, who had a spacious palace erected (1738-1772) by Bartolomeo Rastrelli at the bridge across the Lielupe. The palace contains the sarcophagi of almost all of the Curonian dukes, except the last one. The future Louis XVIII sojourned in the palace between 1798 and 1800. It now functions as the LLU, Latvijas lauksaimniecības universitāte, or Latvian University of Agriculture. Other landmarks include the Baroque church of St. Anne, the tower of the destroyed Trinity church, and two handsome structures, the Villa Medem and the Academia Petrina."(wiki)

More about Jelgava from wikipedia:
Jelgava (IPA: [jælgava], pronunciation (help·info)) is a town in central Latvia about 41 km southwest of Riga with 66,087 inhabitants (2006). It is the largest town in Semigallia. Jelgava is known as the former capital of the Duchy of Courland, and was the capital of the Courland region until 1919.

Jelgava is situated on a fertile plain rising only 12 ft. above sea level on the right bank of the river Lielupe. At high water the plain and sometimes the town as well can be inundated. Jelgava is surrounded by a canal known as Jacob's Channel (initiated by Jacob Kettler) occupying the locations of former fortifications. It is a railway center and an important market for grain and timber. It is also host to Jelgava air base.

Etymology
The name Jelgava is believed to be derived from the Livonian word jelgab, meaning "low place." The origin of the German name Mitau is unclear, although it is suggested that it came from the Latvian words "mīt" or "mainīt," meaning "to exchange" or "to trade," thus making it "the place where trading takes place." An alternate explanation is that Mitau came from Mitte in der Aue, or "the middle of the Aa", referring to the Lielupe River, formerly known as the Kurländische Aa.

My new look

Friday 4 April 2008

One of my best qualities is, that I always trying to learn and do everything myself.
Including the hair extensions.
I wanted them like crazy, since I cut off my mid length hair due to the fashionable bob. And here they cost like 100-300 lats, it's about 500-700$. Well, that expensive for me, so I started to learn and gather information from the web. Found great YouTube videos, showing the different ways of making the extensions.

Then I got my first extensions on ebay, they were about 60$ I suppose. Called easy-loop microring hair, I've got chinese hair. They were bleach blond, to match my own color, 100 strands (now I know that I need more, 150-250 strands).
The whole installations was pretty easy and it took me about 2 hours to get it on my head, wore about 1,5 months, then took them off and got them back from more 3 weeks. Chinese hair is a bad quality, becomes too dry.

The next extensions was clip in, bought the weft and clips, Asian hair, was pretty cheap too, great way to get instant glamorous look, for the evening. But I wore them everyday, huh, too tired of taking them off, clipping them in everyday.

And finally decided to try Remy Indian hair, with a fusion method. Found great demo videos too!
Was hard to install it on my back of the head, since you can't see what are doing there, but I did it, all by myself, and it took me 2,5 hours. Now I'm a happy owner of my 22" blond hair :)

Just an ordinary day

Thursday 3 April 2008

Today is a great day, so sunny, warm and you can feel the spring in the air!
I woke up, took my laptop on a balcony, and a warm black coffee...mmm... Sometimes I think all I need in this life is a sunny and warm weather, summer, and a cup of coffee:) But unfortunately, you can't live without money.

Still looking for a job, and perhaps a freelancer type. But all I can find in Riga is a translator work. Well, keep on looking girl!
My brother works in IT, but his hobby, same as mine, is photography. He uses his pro photo camera, you know, an old one called Zenith. Quite heavy, and needs special knowledge to use it. But he likes it, the pictures are black and white, and they do look old, or vintage.

Mine is Canon A630, quite cool for a user like me, with all that user friendly buttons, haha :)
And I prefer colorful photos, brings the color in life.

But we don't usually take pictures of something you may see on Riga guide. The best places are usually hidden, from the view of a regular traveller.

Old buildings, forgotten industrial buildings, places that were famous long time ago.
I always like the feeling that you have in that kind of places. History...
So, I will be sharing my photos, and stories in here:)

Where I live

Wednesday 2 April 2008

I live in Latvia (historically Lettonia, or Lettland),is a country in Northern Europe. Latvia shares land borders with Estonia to the north, Lithuania to the south — and both Russia and Belarus to the east. It is separated from Sweden in the west by the Baltic Sea. The capital of Latvia is Riga (Latvian: Rīga). Latvia has been a member state of the European Union since May 1, 2004 and a member of NATO since March 29, 2004.

I live in Riga, which is situated on the Baltic Sea coast on the mouth of the river Daugava. Riga is the largest city in the Baltic states.
the city is particularly notable for its extensive Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) architecture.
I live in a so called "sleeping region", 15-20 min from the center, which is a good point, since the center is a noisy place, and also the real estate there cost huge.
But no wonder why, with a such an architecture, in the old town.

All I've posted there was my feelings, after all I've been through, and when I finally got time and read it... was like, wow.. am I such a miserable person? Or maybe I don't see, and write about the good things which happens in my life also?!
So I decided to keep my "sad blog" closed, it will still be my friend, but I want to have friends and share the good and beautiful things!

So I will write about my life, my country, my favourite town, and my hobbies like a photography.
